Uganda offers a broad range of accommodation options. The Hotels, lodges and camps are specifically located to give the best access to gorilla treks and other wildlife game, some of which provide as close as it’s possible to get to a zero-footprint stay. Kampala Uganda`s Capital City also now boasts a choice of hotels, from the generic Sheraton to more distinctive luxury boutiques and 5 star hotels just outside the city in and around Wakiso, Mukono and Entebbe towns.
With a thatch and stone build, Bwindi Lodge consists of a main lodge and 8 sleeping bandas. The main area includes a bar, lounge, dining area, small library and an extensive lookout veranda. Open sided, furnished with comfortable armchairs, low tables, and lightweight, locally made chairs, the lodge is characterised by polished wooden floors, white walls, open beams and decorated with bright colours, throws and well chosen local artefacts.
The
furniture – side tables, canvas camping chairs, locally made loungers –
is simple, practical and attractive. Solar powered storm lanterns
provide the lighting and the bathroom includes a sink, shower and
toilet. Please be advised that all facilities are environmentally
friendly. There is no running water, which is instead brought to the
bandas from the main lodge. Free, fast Wi-Fi is also available across
the lodge.
Clouds is a large stone constructed Lodge situated on Nketo Ridge. Surrounded by miles upon miles of afro-montane forest, the views are incredible.
The
main lodge consists of a reception, lounge (which has Wi-Fi access),
dining area and balcony. It is a modern lodge but with a country house feel to it,
the shared areas are both spacious and comfortable. The windows are multi-pained and large enough to allow for a great deal of natural light to make it a great view. French doors open out onto the balcony, the
furniture is creamy, sumptuous, low, warm and comfortable, the
walls are white and adorned with paintings commissioned from Ugandan
artists. The overall feel, with only the giant rafters overhead, is one great space.
The
bathrooms double basins, European-style fittings and simple lines are both functional and tasteful. The furniture is well-chosen, and the
headboards are beautiful heavy pieces of reclaimed wood.
While not luxurious, the rooms are lovely, and go some way towards
setting a new benchmark standard in the area.

at night by hurricane lamps, guests usually sit
around a fire with their hosts and plan the next day’s events. There is
internet access in the main lodge, Occasionally, gorillas move through the camp which is a rare treat.
With
polished wooden floors, various mod-cons and well chosen and locally
sourced tables and seats, the look and feel of the rooms is clean,
homely and welcoming, Mosquito nets are not provided.
Situated in riverine woodlands, overlooking the Ntungwe River, Ishasha is a canvas, wood and thatch build (with stone foundations), and consists of a main camp and 10 sleeping rooms. The shared area includes a lounge, bar, veranda, dining area and library.
Once
a reasonably simple mess tent, it’s now an all bells open sided affair,
raised, thatched and characterised by sisal matting, chunky seating,
local weaved artifacts, a cavernous sealing and a selection of found
wood tables. Easily large enough to accommodate the camps’ full
complement of guests, comfortable and beautifully positioned, it’s an
ideal spot though perhaps slightly too big for one to meet, view the river,
eat and relax. The camp’s free Wi-Fi service is also located here.

converted, its colonial form wonderfully utilised, the old store forms
the hull of the main lodge. The lounge and dining room are characterised
by white and blue walls, tiled and wooden floors, plenty of space,
great square windows and one or two stunning pieces of art.
Different types of chairs circle the main dining table, a huge found wood sculpture hangs from the ceiling, and the mix of eco-minimalist wood features and crazy paving make for a delightful contrast.
Mweya is more of a hotel than a boutique lodge, and will appeal to travelers whose needs include all the amenities found in hotels like television, internet facilities, and meeting rooms. The forecourt is dominated by a huge elephant sculpture, and the main lodge has peaked thatch roofs, polished floors, African patterning is of a mixed material construct, and consists of reception, a bar, lounge, restaurant and souvenir shop.
