Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve in Uganda
One of the most famous game reserves nestled in the Albertine rift in
western Uganda is the Kabwoya wildlife reserve which is about 300km from
Kampala. As a protected area in Uganda, it’s the newest and covers an area of
87 square miles of land and was established as a reserve in 2002. It is part of
the Albertine rift valley which is an area with a variety of attractions like the Mgahinga
Gorilla National park in the south and the Murchison Falls National Park in the far North West. The reserve is
one of the most scenic wonders Uganda has and occupies the magnificent plains
sandwiched between the Bunyoro Escarpment. The tourist visiting the reserve will
have a chance to enjoy the beautiful views of Lake Albert. It was originally a
controlled hunting ground and a popular home of a huge population of wildlife
and bird species In the 1960s.
The Uganda
Wildlife Authority has been and is still introducing more wildlife in the
reserve to make it a popular destination for wildlife
safaris in Uganda. So far there are such animals like Uganda Kobs,
Impalas, Antelopes, bushbucks, Duikers and hartebeests and for those interested
in primates, the reserve has got a number of different primates that has made
primate viewings in Uganda very possible.
The most common primates that can be seen are the baboons which are seen along
the cliffs, lowland chimpanzees, white and black colobus monkeys as well as the
ordinary Vervet monkeys found along the banks of river Hoywa and Wamababya.
The
Visitor to Kabwoya wildlife reserve can participate in guided nature walks, simple
game drives around the reserve, bird watching, mountain biking, Fossil Hunting
and fishing especially the famous Nile perch fish.
The reserve
does not only boast of wildlife species and bird species but also the
breathtaking scenery which makes the place awsome.
The
common tourist activities within Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve include Fishing,
Horseback rides, Fossil hunting, Guided Nature walks, birding, game drives and
boat rides.
The
Fishing
The
fishing within Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is conducted from Lake Albert where
tourists can be able to catch different sizes of the Nile Perch. There is also
half day or full-day fishing adventures using motorboats for the tourists and only
a maximum of three anglers are allowed in each boat.
Fossil
Hunting
The
fossil hunting is one of the most important and interesting activities that
allows tourists to hunt for fossils that have existed for generations hidden.
Mountain
Bike Riding
Mountain Bike Riding is one of the must do activity for tourists
who are interested in exercising while at the same time view different wildlife
species within Kabwoya Wildlife reserve. The savannah plains of the Reserve
offer magnificent biking trails.
The
Quad bike rides
Quad
biking ride will allow the tourist to view wildlife in an extraordinary way and
relish the breathtaking scenery of the Wildlife reserve.
Birding
The
Wildlife Reserve is an important birding area since it is home to over 460
species of birds including the Albertine Rift endemic bird species.
The
Horseback rides
Kabwoya
Wildlife reserve is another place where tourists can relish horseback rides in
the wild. And the most recommended time is early morning or sunset where
variety of wildlife such as buffaloes, duikers, warthogs and Uganda Kobs can be
seen.
The
Guided nature walks/hiking
The
Guided Nature walks are a must do for most tourists who visit Kabwoya Wildlife
Reserve. And the most interesting nature walks are conducted from the Albertine
Rift escarpment that rewards tourists with the breathtaking views of several wildlife
species.
