The Nyungwe National Park which is about 225 km from the main capital and measures 1060 sq km, is part of the great East African Rift valley found in the Albertine  mountainous section of East Africa in the south western Part of Rwanda. The rain forest harbors more endemic birds, mammals, and amphibians than any other region in Africa and east Africa in particular.



The Nyungwe Forest Canopy walk is one of the main activities and attractions in the park located at the Uwinka View Point. The Uwinka Starting View point is 2500 meters high above sea level and the Canopy walk will takes about 2 hrs to finish tourists can will walk down in the forest 204 meters on a mainly wet and and some times slippery steep slope in the Hilly and Misty beautiful Nyungwe Rain Forest with the help of an experienced guide.

The trails are several in the forest and each trail is named according to what type of tree species found. The most common example of the trail used is the Igishigishigi trail meaning many tree ferns found and the Umuyove trail meaning the Mahogany tree trail. All the trails are well marked and can be easily spotted.

The Canopy Walk

The walkway which is 200 meters in length hangs about 50 meters in the air across a steep and deep valley filled with thick forest and offers breathtaking views across the misty forest with a number of unique wildlife inhabiting the canopies.



The Walk itself takes close to 2 hours from start to end and the end point being at the Nyungwe National Park headquarters which is at Uwinka tourist reception center. The beginning point is about 200 meters under thick canopies and a chance to observe the ground level nature before taking on the canopy walkway to access the top level of the forest. The most notable sightings include several monkeys such as L’Hoest’s Monkeys, Blue Monkeys, Black-and-white Colobus, Red-tailed Monkeys.
What one needs to know?
The Minimum age for the canopy walk activity is 6 years old and must be accompanied by an adult person for the sake of safety
The canopy walk activity cost is US$60 paid at the reception center in the national park
Canopy walk activity is available throughout the year.
The Chances of rain are high so one has to carry a rain coat, hiking shoes and Walking and these can be found at the reception center.
